ARNICA tablets will reduce swelling. They may be bought from BOOTS or HOLLAND & BARRETT. These should be started a few days before surgery and continued for several days afterwards.
The stitches you have are dissolving and do not need removing. Occasionally a small piece of stitch may remain and need removing.
Swelling and bruising may be severe. You should sleep on two or more pillows, this will help to reduce the swelling in your ears.
You must keep your dressing intact and dry as possible until your follow up appointment.
When the bandage is removed your ears will be swollen and bruised, they will also be further back than they will be when full healing has taken place. You should wear a face bra or a hair band to sleep in for a further two to six weeks at night
After the bandage is removed you must wash your hair as normal except that you should use a baby shampoo and not rub directly behind your ears. When dry, apply Vaseline to the wounds behind the ears, using a cotton bud, two times daily.
Symmetry is always an issue and hopefully following surgery this will be reasonable. If this is an issue we will endeavor to correct this. There is usually no surgeons charge for this, however, a facility fee may be due. Any corrective surgery will only be undertaken when post operative swelling settles which may be after 9 - 12 months.
At your follow up you will be given further advice.
